Netball moves to Birmingham’s NEC for 2022 Commonwealth Games

Netball’s growth in popularity has seen its place is moved by the 2022 Commonwealth Games’ organisers from Coventry into the NEC.
On September 3, the change in position has been announced by Birmingham 2022 after they left a regular review of venues almost two years on from their bid.
The upswing at the profile of netball was that the driving force behind the shift. The way by which the Netball World Cup was obtained in the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool will have further highlighted the sport’s capacity to draw fans inside.
England will take to the court at 2022 as the defending champions after their triumph over the Gold Coast this past year and back to home ground, expectations for achievement will be large.
“We are thrilled by Birmingham 2022’s decision to relocate netball to your Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and totally support this choice,” said Liz Nicholl CBE, president of the International Netball Federation.
“While the Coventry Arena Is a Wonderful venue, this move to the NEC will raise the capacity considerably,”
“This [increased capacity] will be welcomed by the netball loved ones and the substantial fan base that our sport now attracts, as seen in the current Netball World Cup at July 2019 when over 110,000 tickets were offered.”
The Commonwealth Games will be held in venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands from July 27 until August 2, 2022.
